Choosing the perfect Christmas tree

In almost every home the centre piece of any Christmas display is the Christmas tree. To ensure you choose the perfect tree, we have developed the essential checklist. You should consider each of the following factors and weigh up what your priorities are in choosing your perfect tree.
Real or artificial
For some people there is no choice – they either love a real, or love an artificial tree. Lovers of real trees enjoy the fragrance it brings to the home, and the sense that an artificial tree is inappropriate. But they also have to contend with dropping needles and many real Christmas trees in Australia do not offer many branches for their ornaments.
Some people feel artificial trees are more environmentally conscious as they are maintained year after year, and they don’t shed needles and need to be disposed of after Christmas. Today’s trees also come in the shapes of many Australian and European trees - far more choice than the one style of real tree.
Size of your home
If you have a larger home you will have many special places for your tree. Decide if you would like to enjoy the tree in your living area, or place it in room that you don’t use as often, such as a formal lounge. If you know you will entertain a lot during the festive season, think about which rooms you will be entertaining in. You might also like to consider whether the tree can be seen through a front window.
If your home is smaller, or lacking of empty corners, a smaller tree will probably be the answer. One of the best solutions for a home with limited floor space is a tree on a table or buffet. This doesn’t have to mean a small tree with a piece of tinsel wrapt around it, but could include a feather tree or two, a slim line tree, or even a metal tree to display your ornaments.
Floor Space
If you think you have the perfect location selected for your tree, you should now measure the diameter of the floor area to ensure your tree doesn’t look too big or too small. As well as the tree, will there be a bundle of presents to fit around the tree? A tree that has branches up off the ground allows you to put presents under, as well as around the tree. If the branches reach to the floor then you may need a much larger floor space for presents.
The other important factor is the height of your ceilings. When choosing the height of your tree, make sure you allow an extra 30cm or 1 foot for a topper on the tree, and to ensure you don’t hit the ceiling. A standard ceiling height is 8ft, or 2.4metres.
Who lives in and visits your home
If you have pets or young children in your home (or as frequent visitors) you may choose a tree that sits off the ground (eg, a table model).
Price
Like everything in life, price and quality are normally closely related. Our trees all have a 10 year warranty so the quality can be assured. Other factors affecting price are the width of the tree and the number of tips. If you have a lot of Christmas ornaments you will want a lot of tips. If you like to decorate with minimal ornaments you may like a tree that is lush as you will see more of the tree.
How much time do I spend setting up the tree
A 7 foot Christmas tree with 1500 tips in a hook on style, is going to look spectacular when set up – but it is also going to take you at least 1hour just to set the tree up. Consider how long you want to spend setting up the tree when you choose your ultimate Christmas tree. If your children or partner help, you may be willing to get a tree that takes more time. If it is all up to you, you might choose a quicker option. Real trees are quick to install but require maintenance time in vacuuming up the needles.
Our hinged pre-lit trees are the ultimate in quick set up. The hinged style means you simply flatten the branches in around the central pole and put in their bag or box. And by housing them in the TreeKeeper tree bags the job is even easier, as you only need to gently roll the bag off the tree, store under the tree, re-fluff the branches and you are ready to decorate. This will probably only take about 15 minutes in total.
Finally, always remember “Enjoy your Tree”!
